He began the practice of monitoring the energy consumption of each home he built, a practice he continues today.

His understanding of what works and why in healthy, energy efficient construction has made him a popular guest on Dallas radio and TV shows. He teaches Energy Efficient Construction for the National Association of Home Builders' University of Housing. The NAHB has recognized Jim as a Graduate Master Builder, GMB; a Certified Graduate Builder, CGB; and a Certified Aging in Place Specialist.
